Liposuction is a method of fat removal from various points of the body, which is not a recent medical discovery. The idea of liposuction is attributed to a French surgeon, who, in 1921, attempted to remove the subcutaneous fat from the knees and thigs of a female dancer, by using gynecological instruments, with poor results.
In the late 60s, European surgeons brought liposuction again to the fore, with slightly better results, and in 1974, two Italian gynecologists demonstrated new ways to implement the method, by using instruments specially made for this operation, and improved the techniques and results.
Modern liposuction, that is, liposuction in the form that we know it today, came to the fore in the early 80s by a French Plastic Surgeon, and through continuous improvement over time, it has become the most popular cosmetic surgery operation worldwide.
Liposuction refers to the removal of adipose tissue from various regions of the body, where there is higher-than-normal accumulation of fat (the abdomen, glutes, “love handles”, knees, calves). With the liposuction method, the plastic surgeon has the possibility to remove locally accumulated fat, correct the outline of the body, and reshape the silhouette radically.
The application of liposuction started in 1992, assisted by ultrasounds, and is an advanced treatment for shaping the curves and outline of the body, which dissolves unwanted fat selectively, making thus its suction easier and safer. The liposuction method with ultrasounds is a modern alternative to the rough techniques of classical liposuction that uses machinery with fourth-generation ultrasounds that are capable to separate and remove fat, leaving vital tissues intact, such as nerves, vessels, and the connective tissue. The area that has undergone liposuction is hardly injured, the edema gest absorbed faster, there are not any bruises and pain, and this results in a much shorter recovery time and the minimum amount of lost hours for the patient.
Ultrasonic liposuction offers the plastic surgeon the possibility to achieve much better results than those that he would have achieved with the method of classical liposuction, because it can be applied with detailed precision, both in regions with a high and persistent fat deposition, and in regions with small, however disturbing imperfections or abnormalities, by removing fat symmetrically, and avoiding the development of unwanted cavities. The fat is removed in such a manner, so that muscles are highlighted, and after the operation, the body looks well-shaped and firm. Furthermore, through the use of ultrasounds, the improvement mechanisms of skin elasticity are activated. This means practically that, after the operation, not only does the skin not sag, but it is also tightened.
By contrast to classical liposuction, it can be applied to nearly all parts of the human body: the face, chin, arms, back, waist, hips, inner-outer thighs, “love handles”, knees, calves, ankles, and with amazing result to a male breast with a severe fat deposition problem. It is recommended, therefore, when someone wishes to lose a few inches from areas such as the waist, abdomen, thighs, or when they wish to chisel delicate areas with precision, such as the chin, neck, arms, etc.
Furthermore, with ultrasonic liposuction, the plastic surgeon can remove fat from multiple areas of the body, and implant this fat in others at the same time, in one single operation. Namely, this method provides the doctor with the possibility to remove excess and unwanted fat from the abdomen, the “love handles”, or the glutes, and since the adipocytes are not destroyed, transfer and transplant it to other parts of the face or the body that lag behind and need to be toned. This fat is called autologous or autogenous because it is taken from and transplanted to the same person. With the transplantation of autologous fat, we can eliminate many of the face wrinkles, such as, for example, the glabellar and nasolabial area, fill the naso-buccal areas, highlight the cheekbones, fill the lips, shape the chin, refresh the back of hands, chisel and lift the glutes, and highlight the abdomens.
This method enables the plastic surgeon to turn a plain liposuction into liposculpture, creating, in this way, finely-shaped bodies, and faces untouched by time. It is applied with equal success to both women and men of any age, and particularly to overweight persons, with extraordinary results. It can be combined with a large number of other operations, such as abdominoplasty, face lifting, thigh lifting, breast, etc., and in case of extensive liposuction, the patient can participate in any social event on the same night
